Malaysia Mandates RFID License Plates for New Electric Vehicles

Table of Contents

The Malaysian Ministry of Transport has announced that all newly registered pure electric vehicles (EVs) must be equipped with RFID-enabled license plates, known as RPK plates. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s smart transportation infrastructure while promoting EV adoption.

Why RFID License Plates for EVs?

With global efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainability, electric vehicles are gaining traction. To support this shift, Malaysia is introducing RFID Tags license plates to distinguish EVs from internal combustion engine vehicles and integrate them into the intelligent transportation system (ITS).

The RPK plate features a European-style design with unique Malaysian elements. It has a reflective white background, black text with an anti-counterfeiting hologram, and a green identifier symbolizing environmental sustainability. The left side displays the Malaysian flag and country code.

Advanced Technology for Smart Mobility

Beyond its visual design, the RPK license plate incorporates RFID and QR code technology, operating on the GS1 UHF Gen2 protocol within the 860-960 MHz range. This enables real-time vehicle identification, automated toll collection, and improved traffic management through seamless ITS integration.

RFID technology enhances road safety and efficiency by providing accurate, real-time data. This system can help reduce congestion, track stolen vehicles, and optimize traffic flow, laying the foundation for a future-proof transportation network.

Implementation and Application Process

Starting September 9, 2024, new EV owners must apply for RPK license plates via the Road Transport Department (JPJ) website. Applications must be submitted online through authorized OEMs or designated partners to ensure consistency and efficiency.

Each RPK plate set costs RM98 and includes:

  • Front license plate with RFID chip

  • Rear aluminum plate

  • Secure windshield tag

Delivery options range from standard shipping to on-demand express and self-collection.

Future Outlook

Currently in its pilot phase, Malaysia aims to make RPK license plates mandatory for all new EV registrations. This policy not only supports green mobility but also accelerates the development of the country’s smart transportation ecosystem. By leveraging RFID technology, Malaysia is moving toward a more efficient, secure, and connected road network.
